Museum of Islay Life
The Museum is housed in the former Free Church building in Port Charlotte which, after being bought and restored, opened its doors to the public in August 1977. The Museum contains over 3,000 objects, 5,000 photographs and postcards, 1,300 books and 5,000 items in its paper archives. These unique collections perfectly fulfil the English translation of the Museum's Gaelic name: Taigh-tasgaidh Muinntir Ile - the treasure house of the people of Islay.

El Museo se encuentra en el antiguo edificio de la Iglesia libre en Port Charlotte que, después de ser comprado y restaurado, abrió sus puertas al público en agosto de 1977. El Museo contiene más de 3.000 objetos, 5.000 fotografías y postales, 1.300 libros y 5.000 artículos en sus archivos de papel. Estas colecciones únicas cumplen perfectamente a traducción al castellano del nombre gaélico del Museo: Taigh-tasgaidh Muinntir Ile – la casa del tesoro de los habitantes de Islay.

The Museum of Islay Life is managed by the Islay Museums Trust and has as its principal aim the conservation and display of items illustrative of life in Islay, from prehistoric to recent times. The Trust was formed in 1976 by the Islay Historic Works Group and the Natural History and Antiquarian Society of Islay. A Management Committee, of Trustees and other interested islanders, set about finding a suitable building and bringing together items to put in it. The Museum building is the former Free Church in Port Charlotte. It had ceased to be used as a place of worship in 1929 and had become a delapidated ruin. However, it was purchased for a nominal sum and restored with the aid of grants, and the Museum opened its doors to the public in 1977.

In 1980, the Museum was awarded the prestigious Museum of the Year Award, and received a further Special Award in 1985. In 1998, it received a share of the Kintore Conservation Award.
