El Complejo Arqueológico de Túcume constituye uno de los monumentos prehispánicos más importantes de la costa Norte de Perú dada su magnitud y extensión de aproximadamente 220 hectáreas.
Presenta estructuras arquitectónicas de carácter monumental asociados a otras edificaciones: plazas, montículos, patios, sistemas de canales, murallas, y otras construcciones que son el reflejo de un sistema de crecimiento planificado y de una compleja estructura social.
Sin lugar a dudas, las grandes construcciones de adobe que integran el complejo de Túcume constituyen uno de los conjuntos monumentales más extensos e importantes del antiguo Perú. A partir de la evidencia arquitectónica, en el complejo se puede distinguir una clara continuidad en el tipo de construcción piramidal trunca para esta región.
Se cree que el lugar fue ocupado primero por la cultura Lambayeque entre los años 1000 y 1370 d.C., luego por los Chimú, entre 1370 y 1470, y finalmente por los Incas, entre 1470 y 1532 cuando llegan los españoles. Según una leyenda el lugar fue fundado por Naylamp un héroe mítico que llegó del mar y construyó la ciudad en torno al cerro La Raya, una elevación rocosa que destaca en medio de la llanura. Esta leyenda fue recogida por el cronista español Miguel Cabello de Balboa en 1586.

The Archaeological Complex of Túcume is one of the most important prehispanic monuments of the North Coast of Peru given its magnitude and extension of approximately 220 hectares.
It presents architectural structures of monumental character associated with other buildings: squares, mounds, courtyards, canal systems, walls, and other constructions that are the reflection of a system of planned growth and of a complex social structure.
Undoubtedly, the large adobe buildings that make up the Túcume complex are one of the most extensive and important monumental complexes of ancient Peru. From the architectural evidence, in the complex we can distinguish a clear continuity in the truncated pyramidal construction type for this region.
It is believed that the place was first occupied by the Lambayeque culture between 1000 and 1370 AD, then by the Chimú, between 1370 and 1470, and finally by the Incas, between 1470 and 1532 when the Spaniards arrived. According to a legend, the place was founded by Naylamp, a mythical hero who came from the sea and built the city around La Raya hill, a rocky elevation that stands out in the middle of the plain. This legend was collected by the Spanish chronicler Miguel Cabello de Balboa in 1586.
